Safety Doesn’t Happen by Accident: Inside Dependable’s Safety and Compliance Program

When you hand us your freight, you’re trusting us with more than cargo. You’re trusting the people driving it, the fleet carrying it, and the systems behind both. That’s why safety and compliance are more than just a box we check at Dependable: they’re built into how we run things every day.

We sat down with Gabriela Corona, Safety and Compliance Supervisor for Dependable Highway Express, to talk about what that work actually looks like for her and her team.

More Than a Rulebook

Gabriela has been with us for 12 years, and she’ll tell you that compliance is only half the job. Her team makes sure our drivers and our fleet meet Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations, but the day-to-day is much more hands-on than regulatory paperwork.

Their work looks like:

  • Staying compliant with FMCSA regulations by monitoring hours of service, driver qualifications, vehicle inspections, and required documentation
  • Treating safety events and observations as coaching opportunities, helping drivers improve through constructive feedback
  • Reviewing performance metrics regularly, investigating incidents, and adjusting company practices to reduce risk and improve fleet safety overall

“We help maintain a strong safety culture across the company,” Gabriela says. You can’t regulate that culture into existence. It’s the result of consistent attention over time, and it only works when everyone is part of it. Drivers, dispatch, maintenance, and operations all have a hand in keeping each other safe, and Gabriela’s team works alongside all of them instead of watching from the outside.

The Work Behind the Numbers

Safety isn’t something we simply talk about; it’s something we demonstrate every day. At Dependable Highway Express, we stay current with FMCSA regulations and work closely with drivers and operations to maintain compliance.

Our safety scores are the result of consistent attention to detail, thorough training, and a company-wide commitment to doing things the right way. It takes discipline, accountability, and a shared culture to put safety first.

A Fleet That’s Always Moving

Today we have 149 drivers, and all of them are out on the road. They fall into a few groups:

Each of these roles comes with its own conditions, schedules, and pressures. Our safety program has to work across all of them, which is exactly why we manage it centrally and apply it consistently instead of leaving it to individual terminals to figure out.

Why It Matters to You

Safety is about protecting people first. Our goal is to make sure our drivers get home safely every day while protecting the public and our customers’ freight. Compliance isn’t just about following regulations; it’s about preventing incidents before they happen. When a team looks out for each other the way ours does, that care extends to everything we haul.
