DHE RECEIVES CTA FLEET SAFETY AWARDS
We are very proud to announce that DHE was honored by the California Trucking Association (CTA) as the recipient of their 2005
  1st Place Safety Award for our Harbor Intermodal Division and the 3rd Place Safety Award for our LTL Line Haul Division.
These prestigious awards are given to recognize the California carriers who have maintained the best overall fleet safety records and safety programs. Selection is made among all carriers operating in California with revenues in excess of $7 Million. The award ceremony took place at the CTA Annual Convention in Los Angeles on Sat., Sept. 30, 2006.

DRIVING DISTRACTIONS: BE EXTRA ALERT!
School is back in session! Both kids and adults are less alert, school busses create blind spots, and traffic is heavier. Watch your speed and be extra alert in and around schools and colleges.
Be extra alert after dark and later into the night for kids and partygoers.
Winter is rapidly approaching. This means shorter daylight hours and longer periods of darkness. Roughly, 1/3 of all driving takes place at night, sometimes more, and 2/3 of all accidents occur during periods of reduced lighting. Here are some TIPS to ensure a safe trip:
» Do thorough pre-trip inspections
» Check lights & windshield
» Maintain safe speeds
» Visually scan and anticipate trouble
» Don’t overdrive headlights
» Allow extra stopping distance
» Get plenty of rest, take breaks if necessary
» Don’t be blinded by glare
Halloween is Tues Oct 31. Little kids will be out trick-or-treating, older ‘kids’ out partying, and neither will be paying attention to their surroundings.

NEW DVIR BOOK
A new type DVIR Vehicle Inspection Book is going out for all company tractors. The new book will streamline the reporting process. The book will remain in the tractor for the entire month with a copy of each daily inspection report. The original goes to maintenance to review and make any necessary repairs. The yellow copy stays with driver, and the pink copy stays in the book for review and sign-off by mechanics.
BIT INSPECTIONS
Congratulations to DHE Ontario and DHE Ventura for Satisfactory Ratings in their recent Biennial Inspection of Terminals (B I T inspections) by the California Highway Patrol. DHE Ventura passed an administrative review because of having three prior consecutive satisfactory ratings. DHE Ontario received a satisfactory rating after a full B I T inspection.
The Bit program is designed to monitor a carriers maintenance and safety programs to ensure compliance in the areas or vehicle maintenance and records, driver records, logs and hours of service, hazardous materials paperwork, DVIR’s, Drug and Alcohol testing, and vehicle and driver inspections at scales. A satisfactory rating indicates our overall rating as a carrier.
Through everyone’s efforts, we continue to maintain our satisfactory rating with the CHP.

The Cost of Accidents to Industry
As part of our ongoing commitment to Driver Safety, Dependable Highway Express is launching a new initiative to help drivers understand the key work elements directly affect their own safety as well as company reputation.
Fleet: A Virtual Risk Manager
Fleet is a customized web based solution that helps drivers understand critical safety procedures as well as stay up to date with the latest "best practice" on defensive driving skills and techniques.
DHE Risk Foundation
This program will assess your knowledge of our critical safety policies and procedures. Every driver will need to score 100% on this module and will be allowed a number of attempts to produce the perfect score. The program will help you understand why answers are right and wrong, to help all drivers achieve a 100% passing score.
Driver Profile
This program will help us understand more about you as a driver and in conjunction with RoadRISK, will help DHE plan further training for each of you.
RoadRISK
This program will help you bring your defensive driver knowledge, skills, and techniques right up to date with the latest thinking in this important area.
DHE will contact all drivers with more information & schedules.
A MESSAGE FROM SAFETY
Why Use Seat Belts?
Safety belt/shoulder belts not only hold you in place while the vehicle absorbs the impact of a crash, but they also prevent occupants from being ejected or thrown around in the cab where they can strike objects around them.
Safety belts also keep the driver in place behind the steering wheel in the event of a crash, sudden turning, or stopping movement, your ability to maintain control of the vehicle increases significantly.
Think about what happens when you make a sudden reactive steering movement to avoid an object in the road, another vehicle, etc. The force of the turn can make your body lean to the right or left and possibly throw you from your seat. You no longer have a good grip on the wheel and can lose control, resulting in an accident that could have been prevented. You owe it to your family to come home to them in one piece.
